EM PROBIOTIC ACTIFERM ( Research results )

Ammonia primarily affects functioning of the respiratory tract, causing bronchitis, oedema, strong cough, dyspnoea. In addition, NH3 causes keratitis and mucopurulent conjunctivitis. Ammonia binds hemoglobin, producing alkaline hematin. Thus produced compound disables transport of oxygen over the blood in the body. Pursuant to the Polish act (Journal of Laws of 2010, No. 56, item 344), ammonia concentrations in poultry houses and pig farms must not exceed 20 ppm.

The experiment conducted at the University of Agriculture in Kracow under the supervision of Krzysztof Pawlak, D. Eng., confirmed effective reduction of ammonia levels in livestock buildings owing to the use of EM Probiotic Actiferm.

The study was conducted in a poultry house of 100 m2, where 889 laying hens were kept on litter, using a standard lighting program. The building was equipped with mechanical vacuum ventilation system ensuring proper air exchange. A method allowing to reduce the amount of gases in livestock buildings involves enriching litter with products containing probiotics.

Probiotics are products containing live and (or) dead microorganisms or substances they produce that help ensure stability of microbial population, preventing excessive growth of pathogenic microbes.

Litter spraying was conducted every day for 14 consecutive days. Using a hand-operated dispenser, 20% solution of EM PROBIOTIC ACTIFERM was sprayed in a ratio of 50 ml per 1 m2 of building area.

Ammonia concentrations in the poultry house on specific measurement days are presented in the table below.

All obtained ammonia concentrations are within limits allowed in the standard. While analysing the obtained ammonia concentrations, it is clear that the use of EM Probiotic Actiferm  considerably reduced ammonia concentrations in livestock buildings. On day 4 of using the product in the poultry house, only minor decrease in NH3 concentration was observed, whereas during subsequent spraying of litter (on day 7, 10, 13 of using the product), a systematic fall in ammonia concentration to 3.75 ppm was reported.

To conclude, EM Probiotic Actiferm effectively lowers ammonia levels, ensuring stability of the population of beneficial micro-organisms, and at the same time preventing growth of microbes participating in conversion of organic substances with NH3 as the end product.
